Ask an Officiant: 5 Questions with Jane Halton
May 17, 2017 Riana Ang-Canning

Today we’re sitting down with Young Hip & Married Officiant Jane Halton for the next in our series “Ask an Officiant.” Jane has been in the wedding game with YH&M for 2 years but has been doing weddings since 2001. She is currently available to officiate weddings in Vancouver, BC and Southern California.

Describe yourself in 5 words

Witty, resourceful, loyal, thoughtful and particular

What’s your most memorable wedding moment?

At the end of the wedding, the couple and I staged a moment where I pretended to forget what their new last name was. Then the couple pulled one of four options out of a top hat and gave it to me without looking. I then announced their new last name to everyone!

What one piece of advice do you have for couples looking for an officiant?

Don’t underestimate how important it is to feel known by who marries you. During one the most important days of your life, and when you are potentially very nervous, you want to feel very confident in who marries you.

What is your favourite part of a wedding ceremony?

Looking at the groom when the bride walks in….kidding! Everyone says that. I have a lot of favourite parts, but one is when the couple, their witnesses and myself head to the signing table and the music starts. The couple usually feels a huge sense of relief because they are “off stage” and almost done with the most nerve-wracking part of the day. It is a quaint moment between them that I feel honoured to witness.

And finally, what song always gets you on the dance floor at weddings?

“Crazy in Love” by Beyonce or anything from the 90’s hip-hop genre.
